When I was a kid in the 90’s, a family friend said to me, “Wow kid, you’ve got some Brooke Shields eyebrows.” When I finally tracked down a photo of Brooke Shields and saw what he was talking about, I was devastated as she had the MOST unstylish eyebrows! I had a near-unibrow at the time, so I got to work on making those Brooke Shields babies into the Gwen Stefani/Vogue-era Madonna/Janet Jackson thin lines of the 90’s, using whatever tools I could find in the family bathroom.
Flash forward ten or twenty-five years and my eyebrows have never recovered. I don’t have the patience or time to draw on eyebrows every day, and my skin rejects makeup so if I ever did try to brush on some brows, they’d slowly run off my face by lunchtime.
Enter microblading! This cool procedure gives you back what you’ve been missing, and it’s not the scary looking tattooed eyebrows of the past. Using a blade, the technician will give you strokes that actually look like real hair, giving you eyebrows that even out and frame your face. Certified technicians go through training in order to be able to customize your brows to look natural and in the style you are comfortable with, using different techniques. In my case, Katrina follows the natural line of my eyebrows, just filling in the areas needed to create a balanced look.
The procedure is not completely painless, but the use of numbing creams and the distraction of conversation and the anticipation of the finished product pretty much negates the discomfort. Depending on the style and your skin type, it takes about an hour and a half to create your new(ish) look.
If you’re tired of putting on eyebrows every day, this procedure is an awesome way to get the brows you wish you were born with (or bring back the ones you worked or wished away. If you’re looking for an eyebrow technician – check their certifications, their portfolio, and meet with them to make sure you feel comfortable and they ‘get’ you. I was excited to work with Katrina at Crush Hair Co, she’s very knowledgeable and went over everything with me and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way (mentally and physically). You won’t end up with crazy eyebrows as she definitely works to understand what you’re looking for and what your style is.
I don’t think I’ll ever have someone comparing me to Brooke Shields again (sigh) but I’m super happy with the end result, feeling myself!
