Well known and bombastic.
Those were some of the words SFU Political Science Professor Patrick Smith used when discussing municipal election leadership styles Monday on Pulse Mornings with Ian Power and Vanessa Ybarra.
“McCallum is well known to Surrey voters but perhaps not to younger voters as he took some time away,” said Smith. “He’s a little more viewed as bombastic, he’s got some history to him and that can work in his favor in the sense of voter name recognition.”
McCallum served as Surrey’s Mayor from 1996 – 2005.
As for Surrey First Mayoral Candidate Tom Gill, Smith said his experience at city hall should make him a strong contender for the top job under normal circumstances.
“Gill has experience on council, you have to think he would be the front runner as he’s running for the governing party in Surrey.”
When asked to describe Surrey Integrity Now Bruce Hayne’s style of leadership, Smith says he wasn’t as familiar with it and couldn’t comment.
