A Surrey councillor, and former cop, has requested to be on Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s new police transition committee.
McCallum shocked many councillors on Monday when he disbanded the Public Safety Committee and announced he would create a Police Transition Advisory Committee.
While wary of the new committee, Coun. Jack Hundial, a vocal opponent of a Surrey Police Department, has formally requested the mayor place him on the new committee.
“Because of my background of public safety, I think I’m probably one of the few people qualified on council to represent overall public safety in the City of Surrey,” Hundial told Pulse FM Tuesday.
His request to be on the committee is not a signal that he’s completely in support of the shift.
“I have concerns (about dissolving the public safety committee), but I’m also one to work within the system,” Hundial said.
