The Township of Langley is working hard to reduce waste and provide collection services for household items such as paper, glass, plastic containers, food scraps, and yard trimmings. There are also opportunities to donate unwanted household items that are still usable within the community.
But none of the above applies to household hazardous waste, which can leach into our soil and water supplies and harm the environment. And it is certainly not safe to simply leave it lying around.
To resolve the issue, the Township of Langley has been hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event for close to two decades, to give residents a chance to safely dispose of the potentially toxic chemicals and dangerous items they have accumulated.
This year, the 18th annual event will be presented by the Township of Langley and the City of Langley on Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, at the Township Operations Centre, 4700 – 224 Street.
Household quantities of corrosive, toxic, flammable, or reactive products will be accepted and everything collected will be properly and safely disposed of or recycled.
The drop-off event is free, but proof of Langley residency is required. Donations of non-perishable food items for the Langley Food Bank will also be gratefully accepted.
“This is a great way to clear out everyday products such as cleaning agents, paints and solvents, anti-freeze, lightbulbs, fire extinguishers, and batteries,” said Township of Langley Solid Waste Coordinator Debbie Fleming. “While commonly found in our homes or garages, these items require a little extra care when it comes time for disposal, as they are not accepted in municipal waste collection and cannot be dumped down drains and sewers, buried, thrown in the garbage, or dumped illegally.”
Other items requiring careful disposal such as automobile tires (limit 8 per household), mercury thermostats, small appliances, and smoke detectors will also be collected at the event.
“The Township of Langley and the City of Langley are pleased to offer this simple, drive-up solution for disposing of household hazardous waste and other restricted items, to help keep our drinking water, waterways, and public spaces safe and clean for everyone,” said Fleming.
Those who are unable to attend the event, or are looking for year-round disposal locations, visit rcbc.ca for alternative drop-off centres for many of the event’s accepted items.
